Melasma sites

Melasma commonly appears on the cheeks, nose, chin, above the upper lip, and forehead. It can also appear on other places such as the arms, neck, and back, meaning that it is affected by places exposed to the sun, where the response to these areas is excessive, so symptoms often increase during the summer.

The reasons for the appearance of melasma

  • Hormonal drugs to prevent pregnancy: drugs that contain estrogen and progesterone
  • Anticonvulsant medications
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Pregnancy: due to the increase in estrogen and progesterone levels
  • Make-up: Some cosmetics can cause a reaction called phototoxin
  • Soap: It is believed that some types of scented soap cause melasma

What are the general recommendations for people with melasma?

  1. Avoid exposure to the sun without sunscreen
  2. Stop using any soap or cosmetics that cause melasma
  3. Wear wide hats and use sunscreens that contain iron oxide

Can I take the drug during pregnancy?

It is likely that melasma will automatically recede after pregnancy, and if this is not done, you can start with some possible treatments, but we at Excellage Clinic do not recommend any measures during pregnancy other than preventive ones.

What vitamins can I take to help with melasma?

Vitamin D, where we recommend in the Excellage Clinic to eat foods rich in it, or to take vitamin D supplements.

Is melasma cancerous?

Melasma is not considered a cancerous condition at all, and it does not have the potential to transform into cancer. However, some types of cancer may coincide with the appearance of melasma, so it is necessary to consult a doctor when any new differences appear on the skin.
